Twitter Postpones Network Up Gradation Following Crisis In Iran.
Twitter(more info) has postponed a critical network upgrade till June 16th, 2-3p PST (1:30a in Iran). Biz Stone(more info), the co-founder of Twitter explains in his blog “A critical network upgrade must be performed to ensure continued operation of Twitter….. However, our network partners at NTT America recognize the role Twitter is currently playing as an important communication tool in Iran.” So now Twitter will be upgraded when it is night in Iran.
Twitter is being used by protesters in Iran as one of the major tools to spread information after the government has banned almost every other communication network. Trends related to Iran (#iranelection, Tehran, Iranina, #nomaintenance) have been at the top of trending topics on Twitter for a while now. Off late Friend Feed(more info), YouTube(more info), Facebook(more info) (and perhaps many more…) are all banned there. This has come as a major blow to FF since Iran was one the demography where it is very popular, primarily because the website is localized in Persian (Farsi). Worst of all….Internet speed is cut down from 128kbps to 12kbps. So practically Tweeting seems to be the only option left! Well as far as Twitter team is concerned it has done a great job. I take bow!!
