All About Chrome OS – Real Time Updates – Google Chrome OS Event:
Google has just announced officially that it is open sourcing the Chrome OS project as Chromium OS.
“We believe there is a better model of computing, and that’s what Google Chrome OS is.”
Chrome OS is about Speed! Simplicity! Security!
Chorme OS will be 100% on the clouds i.e. all the applications will be Web Applications. This is going to bring about a new paradigm from desktop computing to web computing.
Note – Security will play a major role in the success or failure of Chrome OS.
Speed
Booting – in seconds – 7 seconds to boot, 3 sec to login.
Chrome Is Chrome OS
“Slides we’ve been seeing so far is running in Chrome OS”
Note – Google is trying erase the line between a browser and an OS.
Chrome OS is fast because it has cut down loads of stat up process and instead launches the browser immediately.
Chrome OS is secure.
Chorme OS will currently run on only selected devices (net books). You can not just download Chrome OS and start using it.
Chrome OS uses HTML5
Chrome OS uses the power of HTML 5. So, obviously expect it to be fast and smooth.

Q&A Session
Q: Any idea about the price target?
Sundar Pichai : No we don’t have one.

Sundar Pichai : “Chrome OS is all about Chrome, so another browsers can not work with Chrome OS. But it is open source, so other browser makers can make their own OSes if they wish.”
Q: Will this be exclusive to netbooks or other devices also?
Sundar Pichai: Hardware details coming by the middle of next year.
Q: Processors?
Sundar Pichai : X-86 and ARM
Enter Sergey Brin
Q: What about realtime notifications on every page?
Sergey Brin : We need it. Hopefully we can introduce it into the browser. This might solve the problem of chatting when you are not signed into Google.
Q: Wave?
Sergey Brin : Wave will work fine with this.
Why Does It Matter?
Chrome OS is in no way meant to replace Desktop OS (Android might be the one doing that in future, for Google). Chrome is all about Web. So, if you one of the persons who carry a netbook and spend 90% of your time on a browser then you might be seriously considering an upgrade to Chrome OS. It matters because the world is steadily moving towards the cloud. As the bandwidth increases and security improves we might just shift all our work from desktop to clouds. That day Chrome OS will rule. It is fast, secure and smooth and above all it is meant to run Web Apps. I don’t think Chrome OS is a threat to Windows as of now but in future Microsoft might need to come out with a free IE OS if they want to retain their share in the OS market.

says:
Well… too very early to say that Chris. What Google says is that if you have a correct net book and a screw driver then you can very well get up speed with Chrome OS.
But since it is open sourced today so you can expect a lot of hacks developing around this thing what you have asked.

I am not very sure that Google Chrome OS would be a big hit or not but one thing I am confident about that its gonna revive and going to give a whole new meaning to the dying netbook.

Right it would give a totally new meaning to netbooks…. although I dont think that netbooks are in any way dying.
@Chris I came across a couple of people who have downloaded the code, compiled it and are running it on their systems(in virtual environment). They were still struggling with setting the screen size though

Yep.. We can even run it using VMWare. Not tried it though.
chrome os opened us several ways to make a new and advanced os for hackers its a plus point.
