The Rise & Fall Of India’s Youth Icon – Orkut

orkut_logoIt was year 2005 and Orkut was becoming a sensation in modern India. It was spreading virally. The Orkut phenomenon was more viral than almost any word of mouth epidemic I have seen (in India). Yes, even Twitter’s fast growth in India is no way near to the way Orkut grew. It was almost like one fine morning you wake up and you find all your friends (and family) addicted to a piece of Web App called Orkut. Orkut captured the imagination of India youth to such a extent that it was awarded The MTV Youth Icon for the year 2007. Orkut won the award inspite of competing with likes of Abhishek Bachchan, Rang De Basanti& Multimedia Cell Phones.

Orkut - MTV Youth Icon 2007

On reflecting back I think Orkut’s popularity in India was because of one or more of the following reasons.

1). Orkut had a very low entry-barrier. It was dead simple. Unlike Myspace, hi5 (and ‘n’ number of other social networks) Orkut had very less features making it more user friendly, less complicated.

2). For a majority of Indians Orkut was their 1st social network. Orkut made Indians discover social networking along with its addictive nature (more about “the nature of social networking” in future post).

3). It had very good (or cool) look and feel and Indian users almost considered it as a bench mark in both design and quality because it was endorsed by Google.

4). Orkut made online contact management a cake walk. Integration with GMail (Google contacts) made it even simpler. Note- Part of the reason Yahoo! Mail fell of its knees in India

5). Orkut Album became a default photo sharing hub. The semi-public nature of Orkut album was perfect for Indians. Note – Part of the reason Flickr never took off in India

6). Scraps emerged as a new messaging protocol. Scrapping someone was more appealing than sending a short E-Mail (considering the user was ready to trade off the privacy and was not available for chat).

Orkut == (YOU)th

Orkut == (YOU)th

7). Orkut Communities emerged as powerful Forums to discuses and debate (although I never found Orkut communities useful). Just a note -India Community on Orkut has around 1 million members with a rather hyper active Forum.

Few other trends of the Orkut Era

1). Integrated nature of Orkut and GMail killed Yahoo! Mail in India. Yahoo! Mail which not too long back was default E-Mail address of Indians was now replaced by Gmail.

2). Then as Gmail became popular the integration of Google Chat with GMail killed Yahoo! Messenger.

3). Although rest of the world was busy uploading their latest photos on Flickr, Indians preferred Orkut Album. Y? Because unlike Flickr, Orkut Album was semi-public in nature with privacy options. Indians would never have been comfortable making their online album 100% open to public gaze. Orkut Album never left any room for Flickr.

So, Yahoo! was more or less fading out of the Indian tech scene by 2008.

Statutory Warning : You might not like what I am about to write.

It is year 2009 and Orkut suck, it is boring, it is monotonous, it has way too less features with not many apps, it is buggy (no donuts for you!),

Orkut is buggy

Orkut is buggy

it does not facilitate sharing, no vanity URL hence no public profile, Orkut communities still sucks, scraps are dead (scraps? wtf? I tweet now!), no blog widgets, obviously I cannot search and monitor real time data on Orkut unlike Facebook (and Twitter) and it is does not help me drive traffic to TechDusts (I know I am a selfish brat! but the fact remains that Twitter and Facebook alone helps in bringing hundreds if not thousands of visitors to TechDusts everyday).

Times have changed and the world is quickly moving towards the next generation of social networks where scrapping is not as cool as updating your status message every hour. The problem with Orkut is that after a certain point of time it did not evolve. Unlike Facebook, Orkut never embraced real time sharing (like Twittter), Apps (I know Orkut has App but they are in no way comparable to Facebook) and host of other innovative feature like fan page, public profile etc. Orkut did not realize that people are done with making friends and would get bored if they are not served with new functionalities. Sorry to say Indian’s ex – youth icon who earlier was at the centre stage of my online life now serves as my birthday reminder boy. I never thought this would happen. I only log into Orkut to get updated with upcoming birthdays of my friends.

People in India might get offended with what I have written but the reality is – In a span of one year Orkut has lost a huge share in India. It is losing heavily in Brazil and the rest of the World has almost abandoned it.

Snap shot of New Orkut

I was very pleased to see a makeover of Orkut a couple of days back. You didn’t notice? It is invite only (as of now) and you might get over it in a couple of months when it is fully functional. Have a look at the snapshot to get an idea of what it is.

It looks a lot like Facebook. Can’t really say whether this make over will help Orkut regain it users who have already migrated to Facebook. Orkut needs to act fast or it might become a not so dominant second player in India, after Facebook of course.

This is a great post that offers some good insight into the Indian social networking scene. I would like to add that, you might also want to consider the financial side of things. For example, I wonder what would happen if Google pours more funds into Orkut. Facebook has finances too. But I would be joking if I compared them to Google’s pot of gold. Another aspect to consider is the upcoming Google wave technology. Google wave is supposed to integrate with Orkut pretty well. But Google wave may not even need Orkut. The two major plus points of Facebook are the news feed and the applications. With the advent of Google wave, both are countered pretty well.

Hi Akshay. Great to know that you liked the post.
Actually i dont think money has got much to do with the popularity of any social network. It is not money it is about innovation and vision of the people who run it. The main problem here is even Google seem to have abandoned the evolution of Orkut. You can see this evident a lot many times. Take for example when Google announced social Network search (http://techdusts.com/2009/10/27/googles-latest-a-social-network-search-with-out-facebook-gv-updated/) .. ; Why are Orkut profiles (vanity URL) not made public when Google believes that data present in social networks is valuable and should be searchable.
I feel that Google is already convinced that Orkut has lost in the social network arena from Facebook, So Orkut never gets the due attention.
I would say Google now sees Google Profiles as a its new social player.

    Great Post….. Nicely Written!! :)

Orkut was doomed from the start.Having only 2 countries as its stronghold is just not a reliable strategy for growth and sustainability.
Unlike tangible products competition on line is really not that important. Google search is clear example. So even if orkut dies and only facebook remains it would not be a disaster. People go where there is quality and if its free then well..its obvious.

    Awesome article, nice analysis.

    Keep it up :)

  5. Very nice analysis. Time to pay adieu to Orkut.
Still Orkut doensn’t have anything for bloggers and content marketers(two tools which advertise social networks indirectly). This is the biggest failure of orkut.

      Thanks!
May be the New Orkut might help publishers to market their content, but still no vanity URL sucks and no blogging widgets… wtf? even professional n/ws like linkedin have it.
I dont know whether any one in Orkut team really cares about this any more… It sucks man.. beyond doubt… well.. i should stop here other wise i might just repeat the whole post all over again!

    Hi

@ Mayank Agarwal @ url : in orkut their is choice to make ur profile visible in search result which is by default false.
but if i am right only to ur friend’s google search …

Also as said .. many people are now migrating to facebook has one more important reason …. more and more interaction with people from other countries as they don’t have orkut accounts …

      says:

Hey thanks for the info Sunday. You are right that is only for friends search result.
Interacting with people from other countries is impossible in Orkut, as you said this is also an important factor for ppl migrating to a more diverse social n/w like facebook.

  7. ajith says:

    well said Mayank,
as the advent of orkut was the result of a huge empty space in SNS scenario in India. also, integration with gmail and gtalk was a fact. Still birthday remainder and photosharing keeps the breath in its body.
The new interface must be a realisation of the facebook growth, but much damage has already been done. Let’s see if they can regain their piece of share.
And I was redirected to here frm twitter..

You are right. I doubt Orkut would be able to retain its share for long. Facebook is too aggressive. They wont leave a room for Orkut + India holds a strategic importance for any social network. 1 billion people or 40-50 million online users is a big thing for any company.
and yeah Twitter is the best place to get information…turning out to a be a traffic hub for TechDusts as well!

    Good work Bro!!

  9. expressions says:

    Agree.
I am on facebook, twitter, orkut and use them all with same avidity as they all serve different purpose for me.
While I agree that Orkut is bane but I still need it because a lot of my friends who aren’t so tech savvy(thought facebook is equally easy) still use orkut. I cant change their mind.
Facebook serves a similar purpose because many of my friends are more active on Facebook because they think it is hep (as it is newer for them at least) besides it has many better features(which those on orkut do not need).
Twitter is totally different. It is a micro-blog and comparing it with Orkut and Facebook is totally unjust.
At last one word on Flickr, though in India we really dont care much about personal photographs to be shared on Flickr, most of people share their artworks and commercial photos on Flickr as it is specialised for doing so with different licensing levels, sets, groups and sharing/linking etc.

      Well yes… Quite rightly put…
Flickr, yes u are absolutely right. In fact using creative commons images from Flickr is one the safest way to reproduce images/photos… Almost all the good bloggers/publishers i know only use images from Flickr… web is a very small place.. so better play safe!

    Hey Mayank,

Firstly great article. I am a marketer focusing on social media. Being a newbie in my company I was sourcing out ways to market and communicate the services my company provides and I wanted to use Orkut as a social media, besides the usual Facebook, Youtube and Twitter accounts. Well, Orkut has proved monotonous as such! There’s no vibrancy, no real-time updates and just so… 2004!

Shrugs, looks like I am going to abandon the Orkut account and focus the Indian market with Facebook instead.

Looking forward to more articles from you!

    Full marks to you.

  12. Izanagi says:

I had no idea Orkut was big in India at a point as well. I knew that it was HUGE in Brazil and even there it’s slowly declining. Well let’s see what Google does with Buzz going forward. I think it has potential as long as they add some advanced “sorting” features in VERY SOON in order to keep the momentum going.

    • Mayank Agarwal
      (Twitter: @ mayank25may )
      says:

Yep.. buzz had got potential but I have a feeling that Google is goofing up with that one as well. There are issues with there relevance algo. i don’t really find that very effective. facebook is much better in giving me relevant news feeds.
