Yep.. buzz had got potential but I have a feeling that Google is goofing up with that one as well. There are issues with there relevance algo. i don't really find that very effective. facebook is much better in giving me relevant news feeds.

I had no idea Orkut was big in India at a point as well. I knew that it was HUGE in Brazil and even there it's slowly declining. Well let's see what Google does with Buzz going forward. I think it has potential as long as they add some advanced "sorting" features in VERY SOON in order to keep the momentum going.

Thanks for loving the article Finn. Your experience is a testimony to the Fall of Orkut. It really is so very ... 2004! Even the New Orkut sucks and looks like just a cheap rip off of facebook.

Hey Mayank,

Firstly great article. I am a marketer focusing on social media. Being a newbie in my company I was sourcing out ways to market and communicate the services my company provides and I wanted to use Orkut as a social media, besides the usual Facebook, Youtube and Twitter accounts. Well, Orkut has proved monotonous as such! There's no vibrancy, no real-time updates and just so... 2004!

Shrugs, looks like I am going to abandon the Orkut account and focus the Indian market with Facebook instead.

Looking forward to more articles from you!

Well yes... Quite rightly put...
Flickr, yes u are absolutely right. In fact using creative commons images from Flickr is one the safest way to reproduce images/photos... Almost all the good bloggers/publishers i know only use images from Flickr... web is a very small place.. so better play safe!

Agree.
I am on facebook, twitter, orkut and use them all with same avidity as they all serve different purpose for me.
While I agree that Orkut is bane but I still need it because a lot of my friends who aren't so tech savvy(thought facebook is equally easy) still use orkut. I cant change their mind.
Facebook serves a similar purpose because many of my friends are more active on Facebook because they think it is hep (as it is newer for them at least) besides it has many better features(which those on orkut do not need).
Twitter is totally different. It is a micro-blog and comparing it with Orkut and Facebook is totally unjust.
At last one word on Flickr, though in India we really dont care much about personal photographs to be shared on Flickr, most of people share their artworks and commercial photos on Flickr as it is specialised for doing so with different licensing levels, sets, groups and sharing/linking etc.
