iPhone Vs Swype : Swype Tested To Be Much Faster Than iPhone Typing
Regular readers of TechDusts might know the thing I have against those century old buttoned keypads or ‘keyboards‘. Keyboards are the most unattractive and the least innovative part in gadgets today, be it on laptop, desktop computer or a mobile device, they suck. But until touch finally makes it in to main stream we will have no other choice but to bear with those dumb pads. So, today I am writing again to promote the cause of Touchability! I am writing about Swype, next generation of touch technology which is basically used for text input.
What is Swype & how does it work? Putting it simply Swype allow users to trace their way between different letter on a touch screen (by actually dragging their hands on the screen) instead of tapping each letter one by one. Essentially the aim of Swype is to increase the typing speed by making touch typing more intuitive. Check out the video at the bottom of the post to exactly know how it works. Swpye technology now is just weeks away from release. Verizon Samsung Omnia II (using Windows mobile) coming out on 2nd of December will be using Swype based text input.
Swype Vs iPhone Video
Now, here comes the real interesting stuff. Today TechCrunch leaked a video that shows the comparison between the typing speed on an iPhone and Samsung Omnia II. Both the phones are placed side by side and by now you won’t be surprised to learn that Samsung (using Swype) beats the iPhone. In fact the typist using Samsung finishes way before his iPhone counterpart. I am not saying that this is gonna be another iPhone killer. Ofcourse not. I have not used Swype personally so I can’t comment on its speed. But from outside I find it very impressive and this could be the direction in which touch technology might evolve. Swype is also coming in an Android device next year. Swpye looks to have the potential to become the default text input technology for touch screen. Hope it helps in killing the keyboard faster.

Totally agreed Mayank. Keyboards are by far the most annoying part of electronics today. As said ‘they are dumb’

the technology is kool but it will take some time for people to come out from the keyboard thing.
I have to disagree completely. I find it sad that my options are getting smaller and smaller when trying to find a device that is not a touch screen. I’ve tried numerous devices, from phones to tablets, etc, and I’m sorry to say, but touch screen is incredibly inaccurate. Nothing aggravates or slows me down more then a stupid touch screen. Aside from that, I absolutely hate having to block part of the view of my screen in order to input information. Any good electronic with touchscreen should have a qwerty as-well. If not for any other reason then the fact that you are screwed when that delicate touch screen fails.
The author of this artical is apparently a 22 year old assface.
Full keyboards are not ugly and they are much more accurate than touch screens. Just because something is new and hip does not make it better.

Come mothers and fathers
Throughout the land
And don’t criticize
What you can’t understand
Your sons and your daughters
Are beyond your command
Your old road is
Rapidly agin’.
Please get out of the new one
If you can’t lend your hand
For the times they are a-changin’.
3). Come senators, congressmen
Please heed the call
Don’t stand in the doorway
Don’t block up the hall
For he that gets hurt
Will be he who has stalled
There’s a battle outside ragin’.
It’ll soon shake your windows
And rattle your walls
For the times they are a-changin’.
1). Come gather ’round people
Wherever you roam
And admit that the waters
Around you have grown
And accept it that soon
You’ll be drenched to the bone.
If your time to you
Is worth savin’
Then you better start swimmin’
Or you’ll sink like a stone
For the times they are a-changin’.

Thanks for reminding me about this song.. lovely number from Dylan!
The creators of Swype predict that users will achieve over 50 words per minute, with the CTO and Founder Cliff Kushler claiming to have reached 55 words per minute.[3][4] On 22 March 2010 a new Guinness World Record of 35.54 seconds was set for the fastest text message on a touchscreen mobile phone using Swype on the Samsung Omnia II, and improved on 22 August of the same year to 25.94 using a Samsung Galaxy S. [5] The world record text message consists of 26 words and was typed in 25.94 seconds, which corresponds to a speed of 60 words per minute. This record was promptly broken by an iPhone, with a user typing the same sentence in under 22 seconds
