Did You Know? Kim Kardashian Charges $10,000 For Posting A Tweet
Twitter might still be struggling to find their revenue stream but celeb Kim Kardashian is cashing out big on her own tweet streams. Will you actually buy a product if Kim recommends it ? Advertisers think that some of you will and thats why they are shelling out real hard money for sponsored tweets of Kim. Hold it guys…. she is making $10,000 per sponsored tweet and she has around 2.7 million followers.
If you watch Kardashian tweet stream, it is difficult to figure out (pics below) which one is a sponsored tweet and which one is not. But it might just be difficult for Kardashian to keep on promoting products with her tweets and not declaring it publicly that how much she charges for such tweets. New rules from Federal Trade Commission (FTC) makes it mandatory for every one to disclose the material connections (payment or free products) they share with their seller of the product or service.

I think this is being blown way out of proportion. What about all the personalities online which are fake or get paid to promote things but don’t disclose it?

That is quite possible Sunil. Twitter is ‘the new media’! So, for celebs to promote products on Twitter (like they do on TV) wont be surprising… But as Krishna said in the post, what about the new norms by FTC & how will they fit in here? Ok, their guide lines have been confusing right from the very beginning but what it simple meant was
- if you are promoting any product online and receiving any “material” benefit for the promotion by its respective company then you have to declare (written) the material exchanged so that people who are reading that promotion are aware that you are benefited materially by that promotion.
Now, there are many inherent problems when this FTC guide line is imposed to tweets or twitter? how to declare.. does FTC expect that the message/declaration should be included in 140 chars? Should you bio have all these details? any thing else?
As far as i remember FTC said this law will come to effect from 1st of December, 2009.. not sure if that has changed coz i have not seen that reflecting any where around the web. and have they rolled out detailed guide lines? if not that should be coming soon…
and it might be difficult for Kim and other Web celebs to kepp on promoting stuff like this.

It makes perfect sense with a following of 2.7 million. If you had 300k real and targeted followers, you could easily charge a thou per tweet. It’s why these celebs that make a fuss about killing their Twitter account make no sense to me. Why not sell tweets since you have so many followers.

Although her real following will not be 2.7 M considering a lot of followers will be bots, but still it is worth it for the companies who are getting promoted.
