Who Wants To Challenge The iPad?
Apple’s so called Tablet computer iPad is unveiled with not much of the fanfare as expected. Right from bloggers to Twitterverse have gone all the way in finding faults in it without realizing its true potential. No camera, No Multitasking, No Flash, and blah blah blah. Even the name “iPad” had become a source of humor for many. But more importantly post iPad launch, competitors have started redesigning their product line and many others are now planning to launch their product (after seeing the disapproval of iPad). Keeping in view of the disappointment created by iPad, some other players want to use this opportunity to pitch their product in a much better way.
I will start with Amazon whose Black n White e-book reader Kindle is in direct competition to the colorful iPad. If Amazon wants to stay in the market it will either have to cut down the price of Kindle or will have to add some colors to Kindle with not much price hike. Lately, Amazon is believed to have acquire Touchco, a start-up that specializes in touch screen technology. Amazon will be planning to add touch technology to Kindle (which otherwise uses buttons) in order to keep up with iPad and other e-book readers from Sony etc. (More information in New York Times).
The controversial JooJoo (formerly CrunchPad) from Fusion Garage is still alive amid the launch of iPad and is going to be launched by the end of February (before iPad). Fusion Garage CEO Chandra has said that they have collaborated with CSL group, Malaysia’s largest mobile manufacture who will produce JooJoo. He also goes on hinting that Apple’s iPad is inspired by JooJoo and Apple has even priced the iPad at the same rate – $499 as the JooJoo (quite hilarious). Read out the full interview of Chandra in Gizmodo if you really want to have a good laugh.
And, the last but not the least is Sony. Sony has also hinted that they want to enter the tablet arena and compete with iPad. Sony’s CFO Nobuyuki Oneda at a press conference said the following with respect to iPad
That is a market we are also very interested in. We are confident we have the skills to create a product…Time-wise we are a little behind the iPad but it’s a space we would like to be an active player in.
So, Apple’s iPad, which was supposed to end all competition in the market, is actually opening up the market with more players, wanting to pitch in their tablet devices. But you can’t just write off any innovation from Apple so early, you need to wait and see how things change around iPad. Like I say iPhone was a not a revolution but the revolution was Apps that has changed the way we use mobile phones. Having said that iPad is not the revolution, but the revolution will be…………………. (iDontKnow).
