RIP: IE6 Funeral Is On 4th March. Are You Coming?
Some guys from a Denver design company Aten Design group are going to kill Internet Explorer 6 today i.e. 1st March and they are also inviting people for a funeral ceremony on 4th March 2010 in the memory of IE6. Ya its true. They have designed a separate website named ie6funeral.com especially for this occasion. You can actually reply to them that whether you want to attend the funeral. There is also the option to buy T-shirts in order to support this event. The funeral service has already received an overwhelming response that is why the organizers of this event have moved this event to new location in order to accommodate more people.
IE6, the browser from Microsoft has been the most used browser for the last 8 years. Recently, hackers from China had used the security holes in IE6 to peep into Google’s websites. But according to stats of January 2010 from NetApplicatons about 20% of the users around the world are still using IE6. I also wanted to share the stats of number of IE6 users coming to TechDusts. As TechDusts is a tech blog you would expect negligible number of IE6 users. But still around 5-6 % of TechDusts visitors come through IE6. Damn!!! FYI: Google is phasing out the support of IE6 for Google Docs from 1st March, YouTube from 13th March (screenshot below) and for Gmail by the end of this year. Google believes that modern applications should use modern browsers for better security and speed.
Download IE8 now in order to avoid any hassles. We may also phase out the support for IE6 users coming for TechDusts. (Just Kidding).

Sorry, but I’ll be going to a Firefox funeral on the 4th.
Wtf? How can you compare IE with FireFox? IE bloody sucks… infact Microsoft sucks… Take any browser Apple Safari, Google Chrome, Mozilla FireFox all are a lot better than this Microsoft crap.

+1. Totally agree with you Bill. IE bloody sucks!
I feel Crome is THE BEST… next would be firefox…
…. but I can’t avoid it as some of my office application opens ONLY at IE7..(looks like forced marketing.. but I am helpless )
surely last for me is IE7- I hate using it… it takes time to open, gets hanged, looks heavy
I say good riddance. Who really needs them anyways? IE6 died years ago if you ask me, and there’s no reason it should have been kept around and supported for as long as it has been.

Yep… But again there are still around 20% of internet user who use IE – 6. You won’t believe but many of India’s top IT companies use IE-6 as their default browser. A Tech blog like TechDusts gets 6% to 7 % visitors from IE – 6. I sure things won’t be much different for other blogs as well. So basically we need to educate people that IE – 6 in particular and IE in general is a piece of MS crap.

no reason to disagree with you. As a mark of tribute, I am writing this piece of comment from IE6
as IE6 was my first browser, it kind of emotional u know.
Great write-up! I can’t remember the last time I (willingly) used IE much less IE6 for that matter! I have used Firefox for years and most recently Chrome all the time! Sometime I’m forced to go back to IE when I come across a site that demands it….and I pull out my hair every moment of that experience!
