Earlier we have talked in length about the slow and pain full dead of Orkut in India and how it is loosing heavily to Facebook. I also said that [read comments] Orkut death is more of Google’s  conscious decision than any thing else because it now sees Google Profiles as its social player against Facebook.

“The main problem here is even Google seem to have abandoned the evolution of Orkut …. Google is already convinced that Orkut has lost in the social network arena from Facebook, So Orkut never gets the due attention. I would say Google now sees Google Profiles as a its new social player.”

That is what happened – Google launched Google Buzz with Google Profiles at its foundation. That is where the problem starts (at least for the Indian users) – After using Orkut for years they feel betrayed when all of a sudden they have migrate to a much more mature social network (facebook). It is hard for them to under stand that Orkut is dying not only because of the lack of innovation but primarily because of the lack of support from mother Google itself. Just take this for example – two and a half years after the lauch of Android Market Place we have an “Orkut For Android”. Thanks, but we don’t use Orkut any more.

1. Verizon has advertised about Droid aggressively with iDont ads which takes on its competitor i.e. iPhone directly. But Google hasn’t done any sort of this tactics (Do no evil mantra). Google take some lessons from Apple and Verizon as far as ad campaign is concerned.

2. It has chosen a wrong carrier- T-Mobile which has smaller user base while Droid comes with Verizon which has much larger subscribe base.

3. Nexus One can’t be brought from stores and only from Google’s online store. People surely want to have a look and feel of the phone (especially a expensive one) before making the big decision.

But don’t just write off Nexus One, wait for some more time. Nexus One can recover as it is now compatible with AT&T and rumors are also floating that it may come with Verizon.

We just bought two iPads, about 30 minutes apart. Our order IDs are 10,000 apart. Assuming those order IDs are sequential, and they appear to be, then Apple is selling 20,000 iPads per hour.

Fortune also reports some what similar numbers which have come from AAPL Sanity Board. Almost matching with the Phanfare numbers Fortune says

“51,000 orders in two hours,” announced Victor Castroll shortly after noon. He’s an analyst with Valcent Financial Group and an AAPL Sanity member who, with the blogger-analyst who calls himself deagol, has been monitoring the spreadsheet.

Spreadsheet? Yup these guys are actually monitoring iPad sales by populating and monitoring order IDs of as many buyers as possible!

These numbers are fucking big and I can see long queues infront of Apple Store. Few more numbers -

Per hours sale in – $12.5 million + (considering every one ordered for $499 iPad)

Steve sure knows how to sell and believe me there are way too many Apple fan boys to live up to his expectations. Apple is heading toward yet another “best quarter ever” in its history .

Still I would stay wait for the 2nd generation of iPad. It has got to be much much better and cheaper. There will be some cool hardware upgrades and Apple will convince you to buy another iPad, so better wait, see how exactly iPad is turning out and then go for it. For all those who can not wait here is the place you need to go.

From now onwards you don’t have to update your status message but you have to tweet your status message in Twitter. Twitter has done a minor change to its interface by changing the wording of update button to tweet which is basically used to update your status message. It is the most obvious change which doesn’t require any explanation. Its too obvious we tweet, we don’t update.

This was discovered by the military when his Facebook friends reported about this to the military authorities. Following this incident the soldier has been court-martialed and sentenced to 10 days in prison. Not only this, Associated Press also reports that now the military has started putting up posters in the campus -

"You think that everyone is your friend?"

In posters placed on military bases, a mock Facebook page shows the images of Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, Syrian President Bashar Assad and Hezbollah leader Sheik Hassan Nasrallah. Below their pictures – and Facebook “friend requests” – reads the slogan: “You think that everyone is your friend?”

Looks like Facebook will be major weapon in upcoming combats! Any comments?

Steve ~ I Want You To Stop Stealing From Us

By now every one under the sun knows that Apple has sued HTC and apparently it has got less to do with HTC and a lot to do with Google & Android. After all HTC is the manufacturer of Nexus One and uses Android in a lot of its phone.

Although Steve Jobs is right when he says in the press release

“We can sit by and watch competitors steal our patented inventions, or we can do something about it. We’ve decided to do something about it. We think competition is healthy, but competitors should create their own original technology, not steal ours.”

What is ironical or quite amusing rather is this interview of Steve Jobs where he once siad

“We have always been shameless about stealing great ideas.”

But yeah, we know this not the 1st time Apple has reflected double standards in its stand.

IE6, the browser from Microsoft has been the most used browser for the last 8 years. Recently, hackers from China had used the security holes in IE6 to peep into Google’s websites. But according to stats of January 2010 from NetApplicatons about 20% of the users around the world are still using IE6. I also wanted to share the stats of number of IE6 users coming to TechDusts. As TechDusts is a tech blog you would expect negligible number of IE6 users. But still around 5-6 % of TechDusts visitors come through IE6. Damn!!! FYI: Google is phasing out the support of IE6 for Google Docs from 1st March, YouTube from 13th March (screenshot below) and for Gmail by the end of this year. Google believes that modern applications should use modern browsers for better security and speed.

Download IE8 now in order to avoid any hassles. We may also phase out the support for IE6 users coming for TechDusts. (Just Kidding).

Launched only today, this application is already “tracking about 3900 records“. Google sure  deserves an applause for this. Few days back we noticed how Twitter along with Digicel Network brought free SMS tweets to people of Haiti and this person finder by Google is again a great effort.  This is why I love Google. It is not only about dollars and cents, they are literally turning their technology and their monopoly to the advantage of millions of people who are suffering from this natural calamity.
