Years ago a phone book manufacturer might have scoffed at the idea of Anywho.com as much as people today scoff at the idea of computer chips embedded in everyone’s heads. But even proven technology does not necessarily take off at the speed at which it may deserve. Many promising innovations sit on the edge of the cliff and confound their creators as to whether they will fly or fall. The following technologies could flourish or perish in the coming years:

3D TV. 3D has had yet another resurgence in recent years, as Hollywood movies are rolling in the dough from increased profits. But there’s no guarantee this will translate into the same level of success for 3D television sets. Early reaction from consumers has been luke warm and it’s not just because of the cumbersome glasses. Even 3D televisions that don’t require glasses have been slow to find fans. No one knows for sure why. If you ask Roger Ebert it’s because humans weren’t meant to see in 3D. Nature may disagree, but regardless 3D TV is not exactly taking off.

Augmented Reality Browsers. This is a relatively new development that was featured on the LG Optimus 3D. Augmented reality is growing by leaps and bounds as a technology but as a consumer interest it is still a little vague. We can expect gamers and sports fanatics to adapt to it fairly quickly but whether or not the general public wants AR layered over all their online activity is still up in the air.

3D Printing. The ability for companies to have their own in-house manufacturing plants sounds like it would a sure best-seller, and many claim it will be eventually. However, the technology behind 3D printing, or “additive manufacturing” is still very fresh and by no means guaranteed to take off in the next few years. It will likely be used in labs and corporate initiatives before it hits the mainstream market.

Holograms on smartphones. Smartphones haven’t even fully adapted to 3D yet and we’re already talking about using them for holograms. But who wouldn’t want to play a holographic video game on the cell phone, or project seemingly real-life movies into their living room?

Technological innovation seems to be advancing more rapidly these days, but that doesn’t necessarily mean every new gadget will succeed. Sometimes innovation proves to be impractical or more trouble than it’s worth. Only time will tell with some of these technologies.

Last year alone saw the growth of tablets and e-readers, the introduction of groundbreaking smartphones, widespread availability of cloud computing and advanced data networks, and a host of other new internet-based offerings such as mpls vpn services and t1 lines.

With so many new products and gadgets hitting our local retail store, it’s often easy to forget those technologies that are becoming obsolete in the face of all these new devices and innovations. While some tried-and-true advancements still look strong to this day, there are many others out there that are on their way out. Here’s a list of the top 10:

1. Landline Phones

Landline phones have been on the way out for several years now in light of widespread cell phone use. While over 100 million Americans still have landline phones, that number should only continue to shrink in the coming decade.

2. Personal Printers

There once was a time when every desk had a desktop computer and an attached printer. But with laptops growing in dominance and printers acquiring the capability to receive data transmitted wirelessly, the personal, plugged-in printer is slowly giving way to the communal and wireless one.

3. CRT Televisions

The traditional television set, like the landline phone, had become obsolete in the face of new innovation but continues to subsist due to its considerable past dominance. The introduction of televisions with internet capabilities will likely make this product only less viable over time.

4. Separate Microwaves and Ovens

The microwave and the oven have two different functions for two different types of food. But the convection microwave/oven can accomplish all this in one small space and at one lower price. Smaller kitchens are already going the convection oven route in order to save space. In time, it can be expected that many others will follow.

5. Disposable and Polaroid Cameras

Digital cameras and camera-equipped smartphones have rendered disposable cameras close to obsolete. Some people still like taking a disposable camera when going on a trip. There are also those who appreciate the rapid development of a Polaroid shot. But these people are becoming increasingly rare.

6. Computer Mice

Smartphones and tablets have put touch-screen devices at the forefront of technology. This has translated into the development of numerous touch-screen laptops and even desktop computers. External mice, on their way out for a few years now, have consequently received another push towards oblivion.

7. Fax Machines

Fax machines displayed remarkable staying power well into the internet age. But it appears that the scales have begun to tip against its favor: with scanners more accessible and people have less access to dial-up landlines, online scanning and faxing is becoming an increasingly easy and economical replacement for the decades old machines.

8. External Hard Drives

External hard drives took a hit in the past year with the emergence of cloud technology and cloud storage, a service that stands to firmly kick these hard drives into oblivion. Rather than needing to purchase physical space for storing extra memory, people can now simply get an account on Dropbox or Box.com.

9. Movie Kiosks

When the major movie rental stores first began to falter they decided to start installing kiosks in grocery stores, shopping malls, and banks with the goal of bringing in more business. This worked for a while. The decline of movie rentals, however, seems impossible to stem. The introduction of cheap tablets this past holiday season means that a growing number of people have the ability to easily access online downloads wherever they may be.

10. Cash Registers

The cash register hails from over a century ago, making its longevity impressive in the rapidly-fluctuating technology world. But the growing use of credit cards, the introduction of cheap, electronic money-counting machines, and the move towards NFC payment chips all mean that the register’s days are probably numbered.

There’s no doubt that the above technologies have been surpassed in innovation and have days that are numbered. But how much longer can some of these last? There are plenty of technologies in the world – some old, some new – and we might just find that the staying power of some old ones only continues to stick around, surprise us, and defy expectations in the process.

Offering an upgrade and then executing it is more complicated than one might think. Certain adaptations must be made in order for the new operating system to work effectively with the device as well as the carriers. Unfortunaly, source code releases does not equate to instant updates.

Whenever Google comes up with a next version of its mobile operating system, a specific device is selected to launch the new OS. Makes of the the chosen mobile device work in partnership with Google to get the operating system working with the new phone. Once this process is complete and the device is released, then Google releases their operating system. This is the point at which update plans can be designed.

Motorola has announced that they are working to get the Ice Cream Sandwich source code compliant with their devices. Not only will this allow current users to obtain an upgrade but future devices that are to be released should have the Ice Cream Sandwich as well. Once the OS is adapted for different hardware then Motorola will work on making the product more stable by working out the bugs. Once this process is complete, the Ice Cream Sandwich update will need to be certified for use by various carriers. Motorola may allow limited customers to test the updates. Upon completion of these steps, the lreease will occur.

Motorola plans on upgrading as many of their mobile phones as they can. There are certain factors that make some devices more compatible with Ice Cream Sandwich than others. Presently, Motorola plans on upgrading their Droid RAZR, Motorola RAZR, Motorola XOOM and Droid Bionic to the newer version of the Android Operating System. These handsets come with some of the best mobile phone deals, you can check out all the new line of Motorola phones today at the online mobile stores like Phones 4u.

Touch screens are becoming more and more prevalent in today’s gadgets, and Apple iPads have a very large touch screen that is prone to smudging. Oily fingerprints and greasy smudge marks are readily apparent on the iPad screen. If you’ve ever wondered how to clean an iPad screen without damaging it, these tips will help you.

1. Use a screen protector and silicone case.

Using a clear screen protector will protect the iPad screen from scratching and other kinds of damage. Some sources recommend removing the screen protector before cleaning the iPad, but this is not strictly necessary. It is also useful to have a case to protect your iPad. A silicone case protects the back and sides of the iPad, but does not cover the screen. Other types of protective iPad cases are available, but the silicone case is a good choice because it is tight-fitting and can be used to protect the iPad while the device is being used, unlike some cases which cover the screen of the device.

2. Only use a microfiber cloth to clean the iPad.

The best cleaning cloth to use is made of microfiber. Other types of soft, lint-free cloths can be used, but microfiber is guaranteed not to scratch the iPad screen surface. Either use two microfiber cloths, one damp and one dry, or a large microfiber cloth with a damp section and a dry section. Use a little bit of water to get the cloth damp, but not to the point where it is soaked. Rub the damp microfiber cloth in a circular motion over the iPad screen without applying too much pressure to the screen. This should remove fingerprints.

3. Do not use any detergents or household cleaners.

Never use any type of soap or household cleaner when cleaning your iPad screen. Do not use Windex or any other brand of glass cleaner, because it can damage the coating on the iPad screen. Only use a small amount of water to clean your iPad screen. Do not use too much water or let the iPad get wet inside; this causes permanent damage.

4. Dry the iPad screen thoroughly.

Use a dry microfiber cloth to thoroughly dry the iPad screen. If the screen is not dried thoroughly, streaking can occur, which can be just as annoying and hard to see through as dirty fingerprints on the screen.

5. Turn the iPad off before cleaning and remove any attached devices.

When cleaning your iPad, turn the device off. Do not keep cords attached to the iPad. It is also a good idea to remove the case for your iPad, if you have one, and clean fingerprints off of the back and sides of your iPad using a dry microfiber cloth.

6. Wait 45 minutes before turning the iPad back on.

This is a safety precaution to ensure that the iPad is dry before power is restored. Do not turn your iPad back on immediately after cleaning. It is best to wait a period of time and make sure that it is entirely dry.

Having worked with all sorts of internet consumables, George Baker is currently busy with vacuum bags, as he gets to review things like Miele vacuum bags as part of his job.

You’re not alone. Finding a place that has a roulette wheel for your favorite game of chance is not always easy. If you don’t live close to a brick and mortar casino, your choices have been limited to incurring time and travel expenses to get to a brick and mortar casino or playing online. But what if you’re not close to a computer with an Internet connection and you’re still jonesing for roulette action?

Mobile Roulette

That’s where mobile roulette comes in. A mobile casino is an application that allows you to play all your favorite gambling games on your cell phone or other mobile device, and that includes roulette. It’s simple to do and generally free to download.

Mobile Roulette: Getting Started

Start by going online and finding a mobile casino you like. There should be some demonstration of the online casino games that are available on the website, so check out the roulette demonstration and see if the graphics and game play suit your roulette needs. Make sure the application features European roulette, with only one “0” space on the wheel, as this improves your odds considerably.

Mobile Roulette: Loading the Application and Playing

Check the supported devices list to see if your mobile device is compatible with the online roulette application. If not, you’ll need to try a different website or get a new mobile device. If it is, all you have to do is input your phone number and the appropriate code, verify with your phone that you have the application, and you’re ready to go. Create an account for yourself and load it with as much money as you think you’ll need. The website will help you figure out your payment options. If you live in the United States you probably will not be able to play mobile roulette due to current laws regarding Internet gambling.
Once you’ve got the mobile roulette game selected, the rest is easy. Use the keypad to select chip amounts and move them to various spots on the table. When you are satisfied with your bets and amounts, select the spin button and watch to see how much you win.

Apple is not different. When clients order Apple products such as the new iPhone, there order is shipped with a handful of papers in various sizes. Most people throw these away as soon as they deem them useless, or sometimes even before. What most people do not realize is that amidst this cluster of paperwork is a note which warns users that there iPhone should not be held within 5/8 of an inch of their body.

Looking around, iPhone users are seen with their phones in their lap, resting against their legs or abdomen, or talking on their phone, pressed up against their ear especially if hearing is difficult. Once they are done using their phone, it is pressed in their pocket where it rests comfortably against their bodies. Cell phone manufacturers issue this warning in fine print on a slip of paper tossed aside. Apple, however, isn’t the only company guilty. The manufacturers of BlackBerry’s, Research In Motion, issue a similar warning, only theirs requires that the phones be an inch away from the body at all times.

The amount of cell phone users in the United States is nearly three hundred million, which is nearly one phone for every child as well as their adult counterparts. In the United States, one quarter of domestic households were already wireless-only, leaving them susceptible to these dangers. The amount of minutes cell phone users chat annually is 2.26 trillion. While wireless carriers are nothing but excited for their $109 billion revenue, cellphone radiation is an actual threat. This does not mean that users should revert to standard household landlines and throw their phones in the trash, or hold them with gloves, but it does mean that users should pay better attention to their cell phone instructions which serve as warnings that brain cancer could transpire in cell phone users who are constantly exposed to the low-energy radiation.

Bear in mind, every living person is exposed to low-energy radiation throughout their lives in the form of things such as household microwaves. However, the radiation from cell phones damages cells leading to cancer.

For adults, this radiation will penetrate two inches into the brain because of thick skulls. For children, however, the radiation will penetrate further because their skills are thinner and more absorptive fluid is contained in their brains. This should be considered before the next generation continues to ignore the printed warnings at the bottom of their Apple product instruction manuals and begins buying their babies cell phones, iPods, and laptops. These types of wireless communication are the cause of biological effects from radiation with effects shown in 28% of studies, an extremely high rate given the number of Apple cell phone users.

Many people were shocked by the findings, seeing as the Federal Communications Commission has a mandate which requires a low specific absorption rate of radiofrequency exposure. This rate is not to exceed 1.6 watts per kilogram, yet the findings showed effects in these legally low numbers.

You also need to take care of system backups and keep the hard drive in good shape. Here are the 10 best maintenance tools for Windows to help you to be a happier and more productive Windows user.

(#1.) cCleaner: If you find that you are running low on disk space, it is most likely a result of thousands of junk files taking up space on your hard drive(s). You need to occasionally clean up your computer and remove these files in order to keep your computer operating efficiently. cCleaner is a software program that can help you clean up your computer and also will remove your browser histories and other sensitive information at your request.

(#2.) SpyBot Search & Destroy: SpyBot Search & Destroy goes beyond the capabilities of your antivirus program. No matter how good your antivirus, SpyBot will do a much better job of finding and alerting you to the presence of spyware on your Windows computer. You can get this program for free, scan your computer in an hour and see a report of all suspicious programs. You can them remove them with the removal tool. There is also a feature called Tea Timer that will let you deny applications the ability to make any changes to your computer without your immediate consent.

(#3.) Antivirus Software: This is a general category rather than a specific piece of software. There are many high quality free and for-cost antivirus programs out there for Windows users. Your computer IS vulnerable to many threats and viruses. It is critical that you install an antivirus program immediately upon the set up of a new computer in order to protect yourself from harmful problems.

(#4.) Revo Uninstaller: Unlike the Windows built in installer/uninstaller which can leave traces of programs on the hard drive, Revo uninstaller is specially designed to complete remove every part of a program when you uninstall it.

(#5.) Auslogics Disk Defrag: This utility is designed to replace the standard windows defragmenting tool. It runs more efficiently and faster and can clean up your hard drive and put files there they need to be.

(#6.) JkDefrag: Sometimes, people prefer to defragment on a schedule. JkDefrag has something that other utilities don’t, command line support. This is preferable for some Windows users who like having greater control over the maintenance of their computer systems.

(#7.) Windows System Utilities: Yes, some of the best system utilities for a Windows computer actually came installed as part of the operating system. If you do not elect to use a third party defragmenting program, you can trust the preinstalled Windows component to do a great job. Also, Windows Update will ensure that your operating system is up to date and running as safely as possible.

(#8.) Driver Scanner: Driver scanner will scan your hard drive(s) for hardware drivers and find upgrades when they become available. It is important to have the latest software drivers installed for your hardware and peripherals and this program is a highly effective tool for making sure that you are up to date.

(#9.) Glary Utilities: Glary Utilities is a software collection that has applications designed to make your computer run faster and more efficiently. It can remove unwanted and unnecessary files from your computer and scan your registry for problems. It can also help get rid of junk files that are clogging up your disk space and slowing down your operations.

(#10.) ThreatFire: ThreatFire is a program designed to work hand-in-hand with your primary antivirus program. It can be used alone, but is best in conjunction with other software. Using ActiveDefense technology, ThreatFire will find and remove potential problems from your computer. This includes viruses, trojans, spyware, worms, adware and other programs known to wreak havoc among Windows users.

When you use a Windows based computer, it is very important that you stay aware of trends in maintenance of the operating system in order to keep your computer running smoothly and efficiently. These ten tools can definitely help you to accomplish that mission. Most are available as free downloads.

I have been using the Infibeam Phi Tablet for a couple of weeks now and here is my take on it. Infibeam is India’s answer to Amazon. It even has an eBook reader – Pi. Now with Phi Tablet Infibeam enters the tablet market and is by far India’s first tablet.

7' Phi Over a 15' Dell Laptop

Let’s first start with raw data to put things into perspective–

1). Price – Rs. 14999 only (around $250)

2). OS- Android 1.5 (Windows CE version also available)

3). Screen – 7’ (same as Samsung Galaxy Tab)

4). Memory – 8 GB (expandable upto 32 GB with mini SD)

5). Battery Life – Around 5 hours (normal usage)

6). Touch Screen – Resistive

My first reaction on seeing the device was a sense of excitement as this was the 1st time I was about to use any thing with this form factor – 7’ just makes it small enough to hold it your palm and just big enough to browse and do some computing on it. Believe me 7’ form factor is just perfect for a tablet. The device also comes with a really sexy cushioned black cover (right image) and whole thing can fit into a large pocket of a six pocket jeans! Figuring out how the device works didn’t take much time and things were quite intuitive.

Let’s go through the pros and cons of Phi now.

Software – Phi comes with both Android and Windows (CE) variants. Considering Android is not fully baked for tablets yet (let alone Android 1.5) the software platform was as good as an android 1.5 can get on a tablet. The experience would be way better when Phi comes on higher versions of Android and as Android becomes more compatible with tablet form factory, Android tablets will be much better to use. Phi supports a fully function Android Market, so you have a choice of installing an ever growing number of Android apps. From the software perspective I would say everything was at its place and this area will only improve with time.

Hardware – From specifications point of view you will be comfortable will almost all the hardware specs but one – screen. The resistive touch screen plays a spoil sport here. At times it becomes difficult to navigate around because of this. Surprisingly though, I found the on-screen keyboard relatively intuitive. Although, we need to keep in mind that Phi only costs Rs. 15000, so it is bound to have some draw backs. Secondly the tragedy with all tablets is that they inevitably compared with iPad, irrespective of their price. Apart from screen Phi wins in all other areas. It is light in weight and you can hold it in your hand for very long period of time making it an excellent book reader and for browsing internet. The battery life is pretty good and the overall design of the device is quite sleek. All the buttons and plug-in slots are at perfect places making the experience more intuitive and natural. For example the Home button is just at the top right corner of the device when you hold it horizontally. This is exactly the place where your hand will fall whenever you are holding a device of this size and shape. Such small design goes a long way in making the device more natural. Phi comes with a 256MB RAM which looked more than enough considering the speed it was working. Even memory intensive processes were working quite smoothly. Internal memory of 8GB is good enough for starters.

Final verdict –

The price at which Infibeam is selling Phi, it is just as good as that. There are two key places where it needs improvement. Upgrade to a better version of Android, which is not a question of if but when, so this seems to be solved for the upcoming versions of Phi. Second is the screen. Phi would become a great device if it comes with a capacitive touch, but even a relatively more intuitive resistive touch would make this a lot better. The tablet is still a luxury not a necessary. Will people pay for a luxury item that is not as good as the best? I am sure a market as price sensitive as India, they will. My only request to InfiBeam is please improve that screen and you could very well be one of India’s true product companies .

While you are doing work in the saddle, your iPhone can be doing more than just sitting in your pocket waiting to be used to call in a flat tire. Here are 5 apps every cyclist needs.

1. B.iCycle

This GPS-based tracker gives every ride important numbers while you are out on the bike. This cyclometer keeps tracks of your route for later viewing on any map. It provides you with all of the information you need. From accurate figures of current speed, average speed, maximum speed, total distance, trip distance, current altitude, climbed altitude, burned calories as well as trip time, there will not be any statistic uncalculated.

By having your past rides mapped out for you, do not hesitate to share your travels with friends and fellow cyclists. For those feeling adventurous, biking off-road will not force your iPhone to lose any information you. It even has four language options: English, German, French, and Spanish.

2. Gear Calculator

Gear Calculator works out gear ratios for you, based on crank lengths, wheel sizes and cog/sprocket sizes. Gear Calculator even lets you know what ratio you should ride to maximize your workout.

While it is not aimed for use while on the bike, the knowledge you will receive from obtaining information you probably never even knew about your bike, makes the Calculator a great purchase. The chainring size, sprocket size, and crank length and all the relevant math is done for you.
